Deep Space performance residencies support theatre artists who create devised, original, or ensemble performance, and who are in the final phase of creation of a new work. Deep Space is designed to support artists who need extended time and space in the theatre to incorporate production elements and execute technical rehearsals. Artists receive one week of NACL theatre space and housing in exchange for a public presentation of the company’s production at the end of the week.

NACL presents performances throughout the year. To be presented at NACL, performances should be fully realized and uphold our mission of creating and presenting original, devised and ensemble theatre. NACL offers guest companies a 50-50 split of the box office, publicity, ticket sales, and front of house operations. Generally, performances will play either one or two nights over the course of a weekend. Housing is available at NACL’s artist residence.

Each year a host of international theatre creators assembles at NACL's work center to immerse themselves in a week-long, intensive workshop that focuses on physical training, vocal exploration, and the creative methodologies used to devise original performance material. NACL draws from a continuum of techniques that includes the ensemble work of Denmark’s Odin Teatret, Canada’s Primus Theatre, and the research of the late Polish director Jerzy Grotowski. The NACL Performer Training Retreat focuses on rigorous physical exercises, developing the voice through song and resonator work, and cultivating paths to create Actions and compositions—the building blocks for character, and the foundation of a play’s structure and meaning.
