Brooklyn-based Oye Group is an incubator for artists both local and immigrant to New York City. They present an eclectic mix of theater, dance, poetry, music, video installations and film, through festivals and productions. They curate work that sparks dialogue on political and social issues critical to their community’s growth. They work with emerging artists to create, play, and grow in an environment that challenges and supports them. They also provide quality arts education programming that gives their community the tools to generate forward-thinking art.
This is the first of several residencies by OYE GROUP at NACL in 2022. OYE Artistic Director Flako Jimenez will share material he will be writing and refining during his residency for the production of Mercedes — a new multidisciplinary theatrical work, based on and named after his grandmother, in which he invites us to explore our relationship to the matriarchy and our ancestors, familial bonds and inherited trauma, and how our own identity can impact our mental health.
This residency is supported in part, through a grant from the Network of Ensemble Theatres' Travel & Exchange Network (NET/TEN), supported by lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
